Pacific Northwest: Portland (May 3-5)

We had sunny and unseasonably warm weather for a family weekend in Portland to celebrate Mike's Mom's birthday. Many thanks to Glenn & Marta for putting us up in their beautiful log home.

Mark & Debbie, Mike's other brother and sister-in-law, came up from California, and three of Mike's nephews were already in the area. No surprise that ping pong dominated the indoor activities, but we also learned a couple new games -- liar's dice and Shanghai Rummy.

Lots of table tennis this weekend!

Friday afternoon Glenn took us on an outing to ride bikes along the Portland waterfront. We would highly recommend renting bikes to do the easy 5 mile ride if you visit the city. Friday night we all had great food at Mike's mom's favorite German restaurant,  Der Rhinelander.

Over the weekend we visited two Willamette Valley wineries. Helvetia Winery was small and quaint, and we had a picnic lunch out back. Garden Vineyards was a gorgeous Tuscan style villa, true to its name with gardens all around to relax in and enjoy the surrounding rolling hills. We stopped at nearby Rock Creek Tavern for dinner where we found live Celtic music and the best Marionberry Cobbler in the world.

After dinner we stopped by nephew Tim and Kiersten's place to meet all their dogs.
